Kelsey is now entering the coveted 30-55 age bracket, making it all the more embarrassing when she's carded at the bar (and the drinking age here is 18!). In honor of her 30th, we took a casual attitude towards work and spent the morning at Walter Sisulu National Botanical garden. We've posted on this place before, but it's a local gem and worth revisiting.
When I went to Argentina a few years ago, I bought Kelsey a silver cuff, which she promptly lost in the streets of Manhattan. I finally found a worthy replacement here in Johannesburg.
This is the wonderful shop at the gardens, although this plant (dagga is slang for marijuana) was not for sale.
The sprawling lawns are a great place for picnicking!
This rock doesn't look like much, but it's a piece of a Kimberlite - a special type of volcano that shoots out DIAMONDS!
And this rock is a Tillite, or petrified glacial deposit. It's proof that South Africa (and in fact the entire globe) was once fully encased in ice.
A lovely stream runs through Walter Sisulu.
The special exhibit this fall featured grossly exaggerated insects.
Misbehaving at Walter Sisulu can be costly, although they are offering a once-in-a-lifetime discount on bench-lying, fund-collecting, and goods-selling.
Another fun birthday activity I planned for Kelsey was pricing bricks for our new patio project. Whoooo!
Back home, we made Key Lime Bars.
And then went out for cocktails and French cuisine for dinner.
Later in the week, we celebrate again with friends and colleagues at the German Restaurant.
